Ortovero, August 18, 2022

The Business Network Vite in Riviera in recent days has sent to local and regional institutions, trade associations, prefects, and the mayors of the municipalities where the companies are located, a very important communication aimed at highlighting how much the agricultural sector, and wine in particular, is undergoing in this summer.

The most critical points found are:

  • Reckless increases in the cost of energy and fuels, as early as the end of 2021.
  • Difficult supply of glass bottles from January 2022, up to weeks of complete absence of deliveries and the impossibility of finding goods at certain prices.
  • The climatic situation with high temperatures and shortage of water resources with great suffering, especially for young vineyards, in bringing the grapes to proper ripeness.
  • Uncontrolled presence of wild animals such as fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar (to date with abundant litters in tow), magpies, badgers, and the first pheasants have also appeared since the end of July.

As if this were not enough in recent weeks, in the first hinterland of Albenga (SV) a devastating fire of gigantic proportions has damaged the population, threatened large portions of vineyards, in the area that goes back to Arnasco (SV) called delle Marixe and hit hard the next harvest of some wineries.

Massimo Enrico, President of Vite in Riviera states: "Faced with all these problems, we believe that a change of pace is needed by everyone, from politics, to trade associations, from consortia to business networks, by individual companies, to regional officials, to those of Inspectorates, to the Mayors of the municipalities ».

The goal of Vite in Riviera is to promote the territory and create a system to make known and appreciate the beauties and excellence of Western Liguria but also to sensitize all institutions on the needs of the companies involved.

"The way of operating and conceiving any form of contribution or financing must be reviewed, as well as reforming and creating a regional agricultural policy, which is clearly absent today" continues Massimo Enrico, "because we cannot afford to be caught unprepared and / or to be hostage to anyone in the future ».

One of the focal points that is strongly highlighted by the network is related to the value that hunters and hunting areas have today. Unfortunately, in the presence of wildlife, something seems to have escaped.

A comparison between all the companies in the network also shows that an urgent review of the parameters for assigning new areas of vines and verification of the real situation of the areas under vines and their consistency is necessary. Any hectares of abandoned and non-productive vineyards must consequently be banned in our Region alone and the allocation of new areas must be completely reformed.

«To please everyone with a minimum surface, today it is of no use to anyone. It is necessary to streamline / simplify the procedures for accessing and cleaning the neighboring uncultivated and / or abandoned land, both for the protection of productions (see golden flavescence) and for a stronger protection of the territory ”, explains Massimo Enrico.

Vite in Riviera it also touches on a very important topic for all national companies: PSR and CMO rather than PNRR. These forms of financing / contribution require some adjustments in order to guide them to support companies on what will be the future challenges (new equipment with less impact, irrigation systems with suitable contributions to irrigation consortia, land protection, lean practices for construction of wells, incentives for research studies on drought resistant vines ... etc) with a contribution in favor of companies and / or their aggregations, which cannot be, as in most cases, 50%.

To date, the agricultural and wine world are a flagship for the whole Region, thanks also to the promotional activities carried out in the last 4 years. Two facts fully witnessed by the increasingly pressing demand for products with a quality level capable of competing both nationally and internationally.

The winegrowers and olive growers of Vite in Riviera they feel they are custodians of the territory, they are aware that they can and want to grow further but to do this they are convinced that it is necessary to return to a strong sharing between all the parties involved, each respecting their role, which must be oriented towards a common goal.
